"The course helps you achieve clear, synthetic and concise answers"

I had already attended a course with David (on preparing an ERC application), which had helped me compose a proposal that got selected for interview. So I was excited to receive more specific training on the ERC interview.

Ahead of the course, we had to do a significant amount of preparation (list of potential questions, key assets of your project), which I very much enjoyed. Everything “clicks” together during the course, which helped me achieve clear, synthetic and concise answers during the ERC interview.

I enjoyed the real-life experience of getting relentlessly bombarded with questions during the rehearsal; the outside perspective on my project and associated problems provided by David and by the other participants; and the detailed, constructive feedback on the documents by David in between the sessions.

I would definitely recommend both this interview course, as well the course on composing an ERC application. I found that them a very suitable primer on what the ERC is actually looking for – both to prepare a proposal and for the ERC interview. The material supplied covers all relevant topics as far as I could tell.

"I had nerves practicing in front of others. In the end, I enjoyed interacting as a small group"

It sounds silly, but I had nerves about practicing and failing in front of others.

In the end, I really enjoyed interacting as a small group, starting easy and watching each other make mistakes. The course forced me to think well ahead of the interview about what I would do and say (normally I would have prepared it in the last week). I enjoyed thinking about questions for myself and others, both on the fly and between the two sessions.

The course really helped me to have the very firm reminder of a timeline and structure for responses. Something I already knew deep down, but it was very good to have it at the forefront of my mind. I also appreciated to have firm advice on slide design, again a reminder, but these presentations are like nothing most of us have done before.

I would recommend this course for all these reasons - and because it is never a bad idea to push researchers out of their comfort zones…
